today is international girls day – its a day that supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender. This inequality includes areas such as right to education/access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women and unfree child marriage.
I have been helping out at the Baytree Centre Brixton this year – encouraged by my lovely and caring daughter Alice, who has mentored a chinese girl there for the past 2 years. i look after the general meeting area where the girls congregate to wait for their mentor, or for their sisters who are in extra classes and fill in when Alice can’t make it – its a centre run by mainly by volunteers that encourages and helps young girls and their mothers to aspire to a better life and education. they always need volunteers, so if you feel that you can give up an hour or two, please contact them, it really is rewarding.
i always loved this picture of maddie having fun on our shoot one xmas time.
