giacometti

everybody can recognise a giacometti sculpture – that tall thin extended figure in bronze – but you barely see his paintings.  i didnt realise how much a perfectionist he was – re doing portrait after portrait til he achieved what he thought was correct.   there are many portraits of his few chosen sitters mainly his brother and his wife, but there are a couple of wonderful studies of his mother placed in her room that proves he is not only an exceptional sculptor but a master in architectural visualisation too – his muted greys and mustards and loose drawing lines are an inspiration. showing at the national portrait gallery until 10 January 2016.
