maria taught me how to print black and white in the darkroom, her cynotype portraits are stunning art pieces and her daughter victoria is the subject of several photo books that she has published to aid and show everyday life as a downs syndrome child. her family’s endless support to the charity makes me proud to be her friend. she has lived in muswell hill for many years and during my regular visits to the area i have seen much regeneration of the area. recently maria took me to chriskitch – a lovely little cafe – a short walk away from the high street which is slowly being taken over by the big usual chains, carluccios, costa, space NK. chriskitch is a haven from these big corporate spaces – its daily freshly prepared salads and homemade cakes spread out on a bench to welcome you. its deliciously simple and healthy with cookbook available to buy too.
it reminds me of the haberdashery cafe in nearby crouch end – another introduction by maria. its very easy to stay in ones area and comfort zones, but every now and again its good to explore further afield – its worth the journey.
