our friend Deborah held her big birthday party in a barn near canterbury – a fun weekend of food and friends; she booked us into a sweet little cottage in the very pretty and quaint village of chillham ; about half an hours drive from whitstable, 10 mins from canterbury, it was a charming english village with just one post office selling not only stamps, but locally grown fruit and milk and a beautiful 15C church and castle. of course we popped into whitstable for a mackerel bun at the fish market and a brisk walk along the sea – i still miss going there, but forgot what a nightmare fridays can be for driving to the coast from london. can you believe that we encountered 2 car accidents, turning our one and half quick trip to a marathon four and half hour journey!!!
lunch on sat was in a lovely pub, the duck at pett bottom – chosen because some of the party went horse riding, which you are able to arrange from here. there is so much lovely countryside around kent and the bonus of being near to the sea is a big plus.
on our way home, we visited the creek at faversham, had lunch at posillipo, which was nice italian food, but busy with families on a sunday, so you must book.
