he wishes for the cloth of heaven

HAD I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

W. B. Yeats taken from Penguin’s Poems for love

  1. This is my favourite short poem..the first book my husband ever bought me many years ago was a Yeats poetry book with a yellow sticker inside highlighting this poem, I absolutely love it and I feel like it belongs to me! Thank you for this today..it has made me smile..xx
