birthday treats

it was my birthday this week and i had so many treats – dinner with the family at Hutong in the shard was an experience – its a fabulous view and the food delicious, though very spicy – you can ask for some of the dishes to be made not so hot.  there is definitely a wow factor when you see all the views of london lit up.  i know that the viewing platform is higher, but if you are going to pay to just see the view, it may be worth just going for one course or a drink in the bar to experience it.  i think that all the restaurants and drinks are pricey in these tall buildings, but you may as well eat and drink than just pay the £25 into the viewing platform.

the next day my girlfriend Maria took me to see Egon Schiele at the Courtauld Gallery – his bold drawings are quite risqué for the time, but i do love them – i didn’t realise that he died before the age of 30.  we ate lunch at Polpo’s covent garden restaurant which is new york jewish deli style, very easy menu and inexpensive.

robert took me to fischers on marylebone high street for breakfast, the new viennese cafe by the same group who own the woolsey.   it has similarities of the woolsey,  breakfast was affordable, but its not the same as being in the woolsey, nothing can beat that wonderful space, and there is something about trying to replica an era in an interior that is a little bit chocolate box – almost feels like an upmarket cafe rouge, but obviously nicer.  and then to top it all, Alice, my daughter had half day off work and asked me to meet her at 2pm, and then she took me to the cafe royale for afternoon tea in the oscar wilde room – wow, what an experience, sumptuous gold decoration ,a jewel of a room, pianist, and miniature savoury and sweet delicacies, served with champagne and delicate teas – i felt like a queen!  there was so much to eat, there was no way we could finish it, but they put all the leftovers in a lovely box to take home.  alice being savvy had booked the tea through open table and got a 2 for 1 deal – i taught her well!  although the room has been totally rebuilt, it has been immaculately replicated.  its a shame that my mother in law is not alive, eileen would have loved it there.

what a wonderful week I have had.
