went to a very interesting evening hosted by root camp in the open kitchen bar and restaurant in hoxton community college. primarily to increase awareness of the scheme, it also introduced the wonderful idea of an open kitchen run by vocational students. root camp focuses on teenagers – offering young people cooking skills and knowledge of how food is grown, produced and distributed. at the moment, there are organised camps that are funded by the students, but there are increasing sponsored spaces for those who cannot afford to pay. eventually root camp hopes to extend its relationship with schools and catering colleges. the open kitchen offers great food at affordable prices – all made by the students and is open daily – the food we ate was delicious! incidentally, i was sat opposite Leila, who owns the wonderful Leila’s grocery and cafe in arnold circus, serving simple and delicious food prepared from the fresh natural ingredients that you can purchase in the shop.
