whitstable is a great day trip from london – only an hour and half by train or car, fresh sea food, walk by the sea, pottering round the small gift shops and numerous art galleries and craft shops, but gradually there are more and more furniture shops, so you can update your kitchen or your bedroom with a lovely handmade or vintage piece of furniture.  warehams antiques has lots of decorative painted furniture as well as ornamental garden furniture – there are always lovely dressers and tables. Mathers & Co is new furniture and kitchen design company on the main high street – Oxford street – quite shaker and french painted in style, you can custom build a cupboard or a unit for your kitchen.  i loved the beautiful oak chopping boards that he also makes and sells.  L’Image is an ecclectic mix of antique kitchen ware and french painted furninture, a bit more junky, but you can always find a small chandelier or an enamel jut, also on Oxford street.  Kent and London create simple painted furniture in farrow and ball colours – dressers, tables and cupboards.  they will also customise sizes to fit in a space.

  1. I know you spend time in Whitstable rather than Margate, but have you seen the lovely things Zoe Murphy (www.zoemurphy.com) makes in Margate? I met her at Tent London last year and was very inspired by her recycled formica furniture and lovely warm personality. I believe she sells some of her pieces in Whitstable too. I’ve made Jamie Oliver pizzas too… delicious! Mx
