was very lucky to get to the first soho session run by pizza express. sounds like an unlikely venue, but the basement of the Pizza Express in Dean street was first opened in 1969 – the jazz loving founder Peter Boizot always believed that music and pizza went hand in hand. the club has now become one of London’s favourite live music venues – especially the cosiness and intimacy of the space makes the whole event seem so special. i quite liked Mara Carlyle, her folksy voice was mellow and soothing, but the stars of the night were Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter and especially when they did a song together. soho sessions is on thursday evenings and is committed to finding and supporting real talent.
