am absolutely loving the bbc serialisation of great expectations – how could i have got to my age and not have read one book by charles dickens? i think it seemed so bleak and dark that it just seemed to slip by. anyhow, if you have missed both parts, the last one is tonight, just try to get the boxed dvd set later on, or watch them on bbc iplayer – i love the set design, especially miss havisham’s house – the abundance of glass domed display boxes in the drawing room look amazing – you can find these at kempton antique market. i’m not one for clutter myself, but i do love personal collections all jumbled together.

Hi Christina – I too am enjoying Great Expections and can’t wait for tonight’s episode.
You made a good choice with the Bernina – I’ve had mine for years. I don’t treat it with the respect it deserves – sewing cardboard etc.. – and it never lets me down.

Yes! Didn’t you want to freeze frame so many of Great Expectations scenes and devour them. I loved watching the very sinister psyche of Miss Haversham, having only known her as a much referred to image, not the story. I felt exactly the same about Dickens – a glaring gap in my education so read David Copperfield a couple of years ago to get started.
wasnt the scene where she set herself in flames visually beautiful? its what i love about those period dramas, the dress, sets etc… and the boy got the girl in the end, a happy ending!
Yes, so beautiful it wasn’t actually disturbing. i player had warned of upsetting scenes but I didn’t see that coming. Also realised I know a few people with a bit of Miss Haversham thing going on in their home, piles of their history they can’t deal with – I’m going to have a New Year clear out now!
how funny madeleine – since xmas i have decided to declutter and each day i either throw away, recyle, give to a friend one item that is either surplus, useless or not needed! i would love to live like miss haversham, but the reality of all that clutter would send me crazy. have a lovely new year! ps at my recycling centre there is a wonderful area where you can drop off things that people can just choose to pick up, what a good way to recycle.
